Accra, Ghana – The National Theatre in Accra today hosted a landmark event celebrating the orthographies of the Kusal, Likpakpaanl and Sisaali languages, bringing together traditional leaders, government officials, academics, language experts and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.
The event highlighted ongoing efforts to preserve, promote and strengthen Ghana’s indigenous languages as essential tools for education, cultural identity and national development.
Among the distinguished guests was the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving Ghana’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage. She emphasized the importance of indigenous languages in safeguarding the country’s traditions and fostering national unity.
Also in attendance was the Majority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, who commended stakeholders for their dedication to the development and standardization of local languages. He stressed that indigenous languages remain an important vehicle for education, communication and cultural continuity.
The event was further graced by Hon. Mohammed Issah Batagilia, Member of Parliament for Sissala East. Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Member of Parliament for Sissala West, was unable to attend but was represented by a delegate who conveyed his goodwill message and support for the initiative.
Several lecturers, researchers and language specialists involved in the study, teaching and development of the Kusal, Likpakpaanl and Sisaali languages also participated in the programme. They shared insights on the significance of orthography in promoting literacy, preserving indigenous knowledge and ensuring the long-term growth of local languages.
The gathering attracted chiefs, queen mothers, opinion leaders and prominent personalities from various ethnic groups and traditional areas, reflecting the broad national support for language preservation and cultural development.
A major highlight of the event was the vibrant cultural performances that showcased the rich traditions, music, dance and heritage of the participating communities. The colourful displays captivated attendees and underscored the enduring importance of culture in promoting social cohesion and national identity.
The programme served as an important platform for celebrating Ghana’s linguistic diversity while encouraging greater collaboration among stakeholders in advancing indigenous language development for future generations.
